Catching Problems Before They Start
A wellness exam is the cornerstone of preventive veterinary care. Even when your pet appears perfectly healthy, routine examinations allow us to detect early signs of disease, track changes over time, and ensure your pet is receiving the right care for their age, breed, and lifestyle. Pets age much faster than people, which means that a lot can change between annual visits. Regular wellness exams give us the opportunity to stay ahead of potential health concerns before they become serious and costly problems.
At East Meadow Veterinary Center, we recommend wellness exams at least once a year for healthy adult pets, and twice a year for puppies, kittens, senior pets, or those with known health conditions.
What to Expect From a Wellness Exam
- Weight and body condition assessment — evaluating whether your pet is at a healthy weight and identifying early signs of obesity or muscle loss
- Eyes and ears — checking for signs of infection, inflammation, discharge, or structural abnormalities
- Oral health evaluation — assessing the teeth, gums, and mouth for tartar buildup, periodontal disease, or oral masses
- Skin and coat assessment — looking for parasites, abnormal growths, hair loss, or signs of allergic or dermatologic disease
- Heart and lung auscultation — listening for murmurs, arrhythmias, or abnormal breathing sounds
- Abdominal palpation — feeling for organ enlargement, masses, pain, or fluid accumulation
- Lymph node evaluation — checking for swelling that may indicate infection or immune system involvement
- Musculoskeletal assessment — evaluating gait, joint health, and muscle condition, particularly in older pets
- Neurological observation — noting any changes in reflexes, balance, or mentation
Vaccinations and Parasite Prevention
Wellness visits are also the ideal time to review and update your pet's vaccinations and parasite prevention plan. Vaccines protect your pet against serious and potentially fatal infectious diseases, and keeping them current is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do for your pet's health. We tailor vaccination recommendations to your pet's individual risk factors, including their age, lifestyle, and local disease prevalence.
Parasite prevention is equally important. Fleas, ticks, heartworm, and intestinal parasites are common throughout Long Island and can cause significant health problems if left unaddressed. We will recommend a prevention protocol that fits your pet's needs and ensure they are protected year-round.
Wellness Care by Life Stage
- Puppies and kittens — require a series of vaccines, deworming, parasite prevention, nutritional guidance, and early behavioral counseling; we also discuss the ideal time for spay or neuter
- Adult pets — focus shifts to maintaining optimal weight and health, keeping vaccines current, monitoring for early signs of disease, and addressing any emerging concerns
- Senior pets — older dogs and cats benefit from more frequent exams and may require additional bloodwork, blood pressure monitoring, joint health assessment, and dietary adjustments to support aging organ systems
