Answers When Your Pet Needs Them Most
Our hospital provides a wide variety of in-house diagnostic testing with the most state of the art technology available. It is our goal to provide your pet with the highest level of care possible, and our diagnostic tools help us do that.
Why In-House Diagnostics Matter
When your pet is unwell, time matters. Having advanced diagnostic equipment on-site means we do not have to send samples to an outside laboratory and wait days for results. In most cases, we can run essential tests, review findings, and begin treatment all within the same appointment. This streamlined process reduces stress for your pet, eliminates unnecessary delays, and allows us to act quickly when a condition requires prompt intervention. Our in-house capabilities also allow us to monitor your pet's response to treatment in real time, making adjustments as needed without prolonged waiting periods.
Our Diagnostic Capabilities
At East Meadow Veterinary Center, our diagnostic toolkit covers a broad range of testing needs, including:
- Complete blood count (CBC) — evaluates red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets to detect anemia, infection, inflammation, or immune system abnormalities
- Blood chemistry panel — assesses the function of key organs including the liver, kidneys, and pancreas, as well as electrolyte levels and blood glucose
- Urinalysis — examines urine to evaluate kidney function, hydration status, and screen for infection, crystals, or metabolic disease
- Fecal parasite testing — identifies intestinal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, giardia, and coccidia
Heartworm and tick-borne disease testing — rapid in-house screening for heartworm, Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis in dogs - Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) testing — important screening tests for cats, particularly those with outdoor exposure or unknown history
- Digital radiography (X-rays) — fast, high-quality imaging of bones, the chest, and abdominal organs with significantly less radiation than traditional film
- Diagnostic ultrasonography — real-time imaging of soft tissue organs and the heart, performed on-site by a veterinary specialist in most cases
When Diagnostics Are Recommended
Diagnostic testing plays a role in many different situations, not just when a pet is visibly ill. We may recommend testing during:
- Sick visits — when your pet is showing signs of illness and we need to identify the underlying cause
- Wellness exams — routine screening helps us detect early disease before symptoms appear, particularly in adult and senior pets
- Pre-surgical evaluations — bloodwork and other tests help us confirm your pet is a safe candidate for anesthesia
- Medication monitoring — some long-term medications require periodic bloodwork to ensure they are not affecting organ function
- Follow-up appointments — retesting allows us to track how well your pet is responding to treatment and make adjustments as needed
- New patient visits — establishing baseline values for a healthy pet gives us a valuable reference point for future comparisons
