Internal medicine is the branch of medicine that is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of non-surgical diseases of the internal organs. These conditions encompass much of what we treat as general practitioners. The diseases that come under this category are too numerous to list here but include conditions of the gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, neurological, and endocrine (hormonal) systems. By way of routine testing of the blood and urine, as well as imaging such as X-rays and diagnostic ultrasound, the majority of cases can be diagnosed and treated quickly. Many of these conditions share overlapping signs, which is why a thorough diagnostic approach is essential to reaching an accurate diagnosis.
Signs That May Indicate an Internal Medicine Concern
Because internal conditions often develop gradually, pet owners may not immediately recognize that something is wrong. Bring your pet in for evaluation if you notice any of the following:
- Unexplained weight loss or gain
- Changes in appetite — eating significantly more or less than usual
- Increased thirst or urination
- Vomiting or diarrhea lasting more than a day or two, or recurring frequently
- Persistent coughing, wheezing, or labored breathing
- Lethargy, weakness, or reduced tolerance for exercise
- Distended or uncomfortable abdomen
- Seizures, loss of balance, or episodes of collapse
- Behavioral changes or apparent confusion
These signs do not always point to a serious condition, but they are worth investigating. Early diagnosis gives us more treatment options and generally leads to better outcomes.
