Safe, Skilled Surgery for Every Patient
Preparing Your Pet for Surgery
- Pre-surgical examination — We conduct a thorough physical assessment to evaluate your pet's overall health and identify any conditions that may affect anesthesia or recovery.
- Pre-anesthetic bloodwork — Depending on the surgery and your pet's age, we may recommend bloodwork to confirm that their organs are functioning properly and that they are a safe candidate for sedation.
- Fasting instructions — You will receive specific guidelines on when to stop feeding your pet before the procedure to ensure a safe anesthesia experience.
- Medication guidance — If your pet is currently on any medications, we will advise you on which to continue, pause, or adjust leading up to surgery day.
- Day-of checklist — Our team will let you know exactly what to bring and what to expect when you arrive, so there are no surprises.
Spay and Neuter
Spaying and neutering are among the most common surgical procedures we perform at East Meadow Veterinary Center, and among the most beneficial for your pet's long-term health. Spaying (the removal of the ovaries and uterus in female pets) and neutering (the removal of the testicles in male pets) not only prevent unwanted litters but also reduce the risk of certain cancers, eliminate the risk of life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra), and can reduce hormone-driven behavioral issues.
Both procedures are performed under general anesthesia with full monitoring, and most pets are back to their normal selves within a few days. We will discuss the ideal timing for your pet's procedure based on their species, breed, and overall health during your consultation.
