Every cat owner wants the same thing — to raise a healthy, happy cat. You can do everything right with your cat, but if you don’t feed them an adequate diet, you simply aren’t caring for them as you should. At East Meadow Veterinary Center, our goal is to help you to be the best pet parent you can be, and that is why our experienced veterinarian in North Merrick has come up this list of tips of what to look for in your cat’s food:
- Quality animal protein – Protein is a very important thing for us all, and since cats are primarily carnivorous, it is important to feed them a high quality animal protein. Cats require certain nutrients, like arachidonic acid and taurine, to remain healthy, and you won’t find these nutrients in plant-based proteins. Look for cat food with quality proteins, like chicken, fish, beef or poultry, near the top of the list of ingredients.
- The truth about by-products – There are many misconceptions out there about by-products. No, they don’t contain hooves, horns or hair, and in fact, many of them are nutritious and highly digestible. However, you should keep in mind that there are low quality by-products out there, so we suggest picking a cat food that was made by a reputable company.
- Canned food or dry food? – Which is better for your cat? It’s debatable, and both canned food and dry food have their own benefits. That is why many nutritionists suggest feeding your cat a mix of both.
