Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders and diseases of the eye and associated structures. Conditions commonly seen and treated in dogs at our facility include allergic and infectious conjunctivitis, ulcerative keratitis (corneal ulcers), keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye), glaucoma (increased pressure within the eye), cataracts (an opacity of the lens), non-healing superficial corneal ulcers (Boxer ulcer), and disorders of the eyelids. In cats the most common disorders are usually related to infectious disease, primarily feline herpes virus. Most of the conditions noted above can be diagnosed and treated at our facility however some, most notably glaucoma and cataracts may need to be referred to a local veterinary ophthalmologist for additional therapy.
