Taking your dog to our veterinary clinic in North Bellmore doesn’t have to be a challenge!

For some owners, taking their dogs to the veterinarian can be nerve-wracking, to say the least. While some dogs are so care-free that they don’t mind going to the vet, others are a bit more difficult to deal with. The last thing that we want is for you to put off getting your dog the care that they need because they hate visiting the vet, and that’s why we’ve come up with these tips to make your dog’s vet visits successful:

#1. Make sure you pick the right veterinarian!

Not all veterinarians are made equal, and if your dog is already nervous or aggressive at the vet’s office, you need to make sure you’ve found the right vet. Before you take your dog in to see a new vet, give them a call and ask a few questions about how they deal with dogs like yours.

#2. Associate the vet with something fun!

After you visit the vet, do something with your dog that they will love, such as going on a hike or visiting the dog park! This way, when your dog goes to the vet, he or she will know that there is something good to come afterwards. This will help them to relax and sit through their visit more successfully.

There are many things you can do to make your dog’s vet visits more successful, and although we’ve given you a couple of great tips, we have several more for you! Please stay tuned for our next blog to learn more!

Does your dog hate visiting the veterinarian in Levittown?

If so, you are not alone. Even the sweetest, calmest dogs can get anxious or aggressive at the vet’s office. There are many new sites and smells, and they have a stranger touching them in places where they aren’t used to being touched. This can all be too much for a dog, but luckily, in our last blog, we started giving you tips to make vet visits more successful for your dog. Keep reading for more helpful tips:

#3. Practice examining your dog at home.

Just as being handled by a doctor can be uncomfortable for people, it can also be uncomfortable for dogs! The only difference is that people understand why they are being handled and dogs don’t. Being examined and handled in new ways can make the whole process of going to the vet more difficult for many dogs, so it’s advisable that you get them used to being handled this way at home. Practice examining your dog while giving them plenty of praise and lots of treats. This will help them to stay more comfortable while they are being handled by the vet.

#4. Let your dog get acquainted with the veterinary clinic beforehand.

For some dogs, simply being in a new place is enough of a reason to be on alert. That’s why, before your dog’s first appointment at a new clinic, you should take him or her over there to check it out. Let them explore and smell things a bit, and be sure to give them plenty of love and treats. This will help them to become familiar with the vet’s office before they have to be subjected to unpleasant shots or examinations.

We have just a few more tips for you to make vet visits successful. If you would like to learn more, please stay tuned for our next blog.

Do you dread taking your dog to the vet because he or she hates it?

Many dogs hate going to the vet, but with a little preparation, you can make visiting our veterinary clinic in North Merrick much easier. In our last blog, we went over a couple of to make your vet visits more successful. Today, we’ll be finishing up this blog series with these last few tips to make vet visits more successful:

#5. Give your dog plenty of tasty treats.

One of the best ways to encourage your dog to actually like seeing the vet is to give them plenty of tasty treats while you are there. Give them treats while sitting in the waiting room, while your dog is getting examined, given shots, etc. and as you are walking to your car. This will help your dog to associate going to the vet with something positive. Make sure you break their treats into small pieces so that you don’t overdo it and give them a stomach ache.

#6. Make sure you are relaxed.

Dogs are very attuned to our feelings and emotions. If you are feeling nervous or anxious about bringing your dog the vet, they are likely to pick up on it. Take a few moments to make yourself calm and relaxed before going to vet to help your dog stay calm and relaxed.

#7. Talk to the vet about your concerns.

If you are worried about your dog’s behavior at the vet, talk to the vet about it beforehand! This is especially important if your dog is aggressive. The vet will probably have several ideas for how to prepare your dog for their visit and the kinds of precautions you can take to make it safer for everyone involved.
