Do you dread taking your dog to the vet because he or she hates it?
Many dogs hate going to the vet, but with a little preparation, you can make visiting our veterinary clinic in North Merrick much easier. In our last blog, we went over a couple of to make your vet visits more successful. Today, we’ll be finishing up this blog series with these last few tips to make vet visits more successful:
#5. Give your dog plenty of tasty treats.
One of the best ways to encourage your dog to actually like seeing the vet is to give them plenty of tasty treats while you are there. Give them treats while sitting in the waiting room, while your dog is getting examined, given shots, etc. and as you are walking to your car. This will help your dog to associate going to the vet with something positive. Make sure you break their treats into small pieces so that you don’t overdo it and give them a stomach ache.
#6. Make sure you are relaxed.
Dogs are very attuned to our feelings and emotions. If you are feeling nervous or anxious about bringing your dog the vet, they are likely to pick up on it. Take a few moments to make yourself calm and relaxed before going to vet to help your dog stay calm and relaxed.
#7. Talk to the vet about your concerns.
If you are worried about your dog’s behavior at the vet, talk to the vet about it beforehand! This is especially important if your dog is aggressive. The vet will probably have several ideas for how to prepare your dog for their visit and the kinds of precautions you can take to make it safer for everyone involved.
