Diet is the basis of health.

Diet is incredibly important for all animals, and cats are no exception. Your cat’s health and diet go hand in hand, but unfortunately, not many cat owners understand just how important diet is. With so many brands and types of cat food, it can be difficult to know what is healthy and what isn’t, and it is all too easy to make mistakes that your cat could end up paying for. The following is a list from our veterinary clinic in Levittown of common cat food mistakes to avoid:

Mistake #1. Failing to consult your veterinarian.

You turn to your veterinarian for all aspects of your cat’s health, so why should your cat’s diet be any different? Rather than reading an article or asking friends and family for advice, it’s important to consult your veterinarian. He or she will be able to make scientific recommendations based on your cat’s body type, age, activity level, etc. Plus, your veterinarian will be able to spot any adverse effects that may result from certain foods.

Mistake #2. Not accounting for calories.

Just as individual people have specific calorie needs, so do cats. While many cat food manufacturers will list the calories online or on their packaging, your veterinarian is the one who should be making the calls about how many calories your cat actually needs.

Mistake #3. Giving your cat too many treats.

While treats can certainly keep your cat in good spirits, they aren’t typically a healthy part of his or her diet. Find healthy cat treats, and make sure that you don’t overdo it with treats. Too many cat treats can lead to weight gain and a whole host of other problems.
